ETHIVA – Beaten Track

ETHIVA have been part of the Asturias psychedelic and progressive rock scene since 2011. Originating from northern Spain, the group began as a trio working within long-form psych-prog structures, characterized by extended guitar passages and spacious arrangements. Their early discography includes ETHIVA (2013) and Sublime Island (2017), both self-released and circulated mainly within the Spanish underground psych community.

After several years of limited activity, the band returned in 2025 with Beaten Track, released May 13, 2025, marking their first full-length album in eight years. This time ETHIVA appear as a four-piece:

  • Javi Lorenzo – Guitar
  • Ramón Fernández – Drums
  • Iván Muñoz – Bass
  • Camil Cinnamon – Vocals

Camil’s addition is the biggest structural change in the lineup since the band formed. ETHIVA’s previous releases either relied on soft, low-profile vocals or leaned heavily on instrumental sections. Beaten Track is the first record where the vocals become a more consistent element of the sound. Camil’s voice sits higher in the mix, with a clearer presence than earlier albums. It’s a smooth, slightly airy vocal tone that blends into the band’s long compositions without overpowering them. Several listeners on Bandcamp mention that her voice “brings something particular” to the band, and it opens up space for more defined lyrical sections while maintaining ETHIVA’s preference for long instrumental grooves.

Recording & Production

The album went through a full production cycle across two different studios in Asturias:

  • Music Recorded – November 2023
    OVNI Studios (Llanera, Asturias)
    Engineered by Sergio Díaz (Firu)
  • Vocals Recorded – December 2023
    Tutu Studios (Avilés, Asturias)
    Engineered by Sergio Rodríguez
  • Mixed & Mastered – April 2024
    Tutu Studios
    (also by Sergio Rodríguez)

This gives the record a unified sound despite being recorded in two locations. The band have maintained their approach of long-form tracks, with the shortest entry at nearly six minutes and most reaching seven to eight minutes.

Music & Compositional Style

ETHIVA classify themselves under psychedelic rock, progressive rock, and rock—tags that match their musical structure. On Beaten Track, the songs follow the same direction as earlier releases: mid-tempo rhythms, repeating guitar motifs, lightly saturated tones, extended bass lines, and gradual development rather than abrupt shifts. The vocal sections appear at measured intervals, leaving space for instrumental interplay.

Each piece maintains the band’s familiar structure: slow build, extended middle section, and a closing theme that ties the arrangement together. The introduction of a dedicated vocalist doesn’t replace their instrumental identity; instead, it adjusts the dynamic slightly—vocals now act as an added layer rather than the main focal point.

Physical Release

The album appears in a limited edition of 300 copies, released through Clostridium Records in 2025. The pressing is a 180g red/black marbled vinyl, packaged in a gatefold sleeve, and includes a Bandcamp download code and a sticker. The artwork was created by Héctor Castañón (OSSOBÜKO), matching the band’s preference for vibrant and detailed visual design.

With Beaten Track, ETHIVA now operate as a quartet and continue representing the Asturias psych-rock scene, which also includes a number of small but active regional collectives and venues. Their previous album dates back to 2017, and the eight-year gap between full-length releases positions this record as a return to activity rather than a reinvention. Their social platforms—Instagram and Facebook—have been reactivated with updates related to the vinyl and release date, suggesting a more visible phase for the band after a long pause.
