How DMT May Be Related To Psychic Phenomena

If you’ve ever experienced moments of deja vu, prophetic dreams, or extremely powerful moments of intuition, understanding your ‘glimpses into the future’ or ‘memories from the past’ may be somewhat perplexing. For those who are not spiritually inclined, the general opinion may be that these experiences are just part of the random chaos of the universe, but for others on the more spiritual side of the spectrum, the school of thought may be that out of this “chaos” there is order. But, what if (beyond opinion) science could prove the validity of the prophetic state, and we could have data to back up just why we receive these messages that seem to be beyond ourselves?

Dr. Rick Strassman may be able to prove just that. For those of you who are unfamiliar with his work, in 1990 Rick Strassman MD began his groundbreaking research on psychedelics, in particular N, N-dimethyltryptamine (aka: DMT). DMT is present in all of human life, as this chemical is produced by the pineal gland in our brains, and it is believed that this chemical is responsible for naturally occuring ‘psychedelic’ states (ie: birth, death, near-death, psychosis, and mystical experiences). During the course of a five-year study, he administered approximately 400 doses of DMT to 60 human volunteers at the University of New Mexico’s School of Medicine in Albuquerque. His book, “DMT: The Spirit Molecule,” is an indepth account of what happened over those 5 years, and how this chemical may change our understanding of the human experience, and the boundaries of consciousness.

DMT: The Spirit Molecule

Since “DMT: The Spirit Molecule” was released in 2000, Rick has put out a documentary of the same name (see: DMT: The Spirit Molecule), as well as several other books which explore this topic of conversation. Rick’s latest book, “DMT and the Soul of Prophecy,” explores the relationship between DMT and the prophetic state. The book expands upon the relationship between science and spirit, and elaborates on the “theoneurological” (as opposed to “neurotheology“) model of spiritual experience, stating: “The bottom-up perspective is represented by neurotheology wherein changes in brain chemistry give the impression of communicating with the divine, whereas my new model, theoneurology, posits that God communicates with us via the agency of the brain.” Rick postulates that the visions of the Hebrew prophets – such as Ezekiel, Moses, Adam, and Daniel – were strikingly similar to the experiences of the patients he worked with during his DMT studies. He has carefully examined the concept of prophecy in the Hebrew Bible, and he’s come to believe that it is actually a “state of consciousness” that may share biological and metaphysical mechanisms with the DMT effect.

As DMT has become more a part of the mainstream topic of conversation, with the popularization of ayahuasca and the help of Reset.me, which has opened up a channel of dialogue for others to share their experiences, the synchronicity key that we can see in these experiences of higher consciousness is that many people do have shared visions, ‘downloads,’ and messages from beyond – that seem to be congruent with ‘prophecy.’ While the nature of language has changed due to our current culture/society, the thread of connectivity to the past may weave a bigger tapestry than we can currently imagine. Looking to the past for the ties that bind may help us further understand our connection to one another, to the source of it all, and to the ‘messages’ that we may be receiving to assist our collective destiny.
